Altar
Τhe place where the devotees gathered to communicate with the god, to attend the sacrifices and to bring their offerings

Anta (pl. antae)
Τhe projection of the side walls of the cella at the facade of the temple

Antae capital (or epicranon)
Crowning of the antae as the capitals on the columns

Architrave
Part of the temple placed above the columns connecting them.

Cella
The main temple, the closed hall, where the statue of the god or goddess stood

Coffer
Square recess under the marble ceiling

Colonnade
Series of evenly spaced columns of the same height to create a portico

Column
It consists of a shaft and a capital and is repeated in a row around the main temple

Cornice horizontal
Part of the temple that projects above the frieze, so as to protect both the frieze and the architrave from rainwater

Cornice raking
The element that bounds the raking sides of the pediments formed by the pitched roof

Crepis
The base of the temple. It consists of three steps

Cymation (or moulding)
The linear relief, usually horizontal element whose puprpose was to articulate the surfaces of the fronts. Three kinds are distinguished, on the basis of their decoration: Doric, Ionic and Lesbian

Entablature
The upper part of the temple placed above the columns. It consists of three distinct heightwise parts: the epistyle, the frieze and the cornice

Façade
The main (front) part of the builiding

Frieze Doric
The band placed above the architrave. It consists of triglyphs and metopes

Frieze Ionic
The continuous relief band running around the cella above the architrave

Inscription
Marble stele with engraved text

Metope
Square plaque usually with relief decoration that alternates with triglyphs, above the architrave in the doric order

Pediment
The triangular area with sculptures, formed by the roof at each narrow side of the temple

Sima
A special guttering situated above the raking cornice preventing the rainwater from the roof falling onto the pediment

Stylobate
The uppermost step of the crepis of the temple. The columns set directly on the stylobate

Triglyph
Part of the temple, each with three vertical sections in relief. It alternates with the metopes, above the architrave in the doric order
